A SOCIAL, HUMANIORA AND TOURISM CENTER

A. Overview

The Center for Social, Humanities, and Tourism is a new center formed in 2019 at the Institute for Research and Community Service, State University of Malang. Previously, this center was called the Center for Social, Humanities, Sports and Health Research and Service (P3SHOK) which is one of the seven research and service centers in the Institute for Research and Community Service (LP2M), State University of Malang. P3SHOK is an integral part of MUs that are assigned the task of carrying out research, service, publication and dissemination of research and service results as well as initiating cooperation with research institutions both national and international in the fields of social, humanities, sports and health.

In order to realize these tasks P3SHOK focuses on several activities, including:

  1. Preservation and development of local and national culture;
  2. Inventory of potential and cultural heritage;
  3. Community health awareness and assistance;
  4. Analysis of social development;
  5. The discovery of more harmonious life patterns;
  6. Study and training of sports education, achievement, and recreation, and;
  7. Initiation of research collaborations with institutions

P3SHOK has a vision in the form of becoming a superior and authoritative center for social, humanities, sports, and health studies and development, which is able to bridge and provide comprehensive solutions to social dynamics. Based on this vision, this center outlines the following missions, (1) Encouraging the creation of a more competitive and varied social, humanities, sports and health study atmosphere; (2) Facilitating the implementation of study results in the social, humanities, sports and health fields to make them more efficient and of high use value for social life; (3) Initiating the awakening networking research with partner institutions from both universities and the private sector at the local, national and international levels in order to increase theoretical and practical contributions to social life; and (4) disseminating the work and results of research in the social, humanities, sports and health fields to the wider community in order to create an intelligent and cultured society.

Some of the main functions in this center are, (1) Conducting various studies, research and development of social sciences, humanities, sports and health; (2) Carry out research and community service for moral development, empowerment and increase community participation in development, and improve the quality of health and sports achievements; and (3) Providing consultation, training and mentoring services for moral development, empowerment and enhancement of community participation in development and improvement of health quality and sports achievements. This center has several divisions consisting of competent experts. The various divisions, among others, the Social Sector, the Humanities Sector,. Sports and Health, and Cooperation and Publications. All existing divisions carry out the main tasks of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education and provide services in the form of, (1) Training and assistance to educators and education staff to improve the quality of education based on character, culture and local wisdom; (2) Mapping and analysis of social and cultural heritage potentials; (3) Training local athletes to improve sports performance; and (4) Mentoring stakeholder in order to increase awareness of health.

The Center for Social Humanities and Tourism (PSP) was only formed in 2019 based on the UM Rector's Decree No. Chancellor's Regulation Number 22.1.25 / UN32 / OT / 2019 concerning the Dissolution and Establishment of a Center at the State University of Malang. PSP. is an integral part of the Institute for Research and Community Service, State University of Malang, which continues the function of P3SHOK. However, with the formation of a new central structure, the center is now more focused on the socio-humanities and tourism sectors. PSP is led by a central head who coordinates the three developer coordinators. Namely the coordinator of the Social Development Team, the Coordinator of the Humanities, and the coordinator of the Tourism sector.

B. Main Duties and Objectives

The main task of PSP is to become a center for superior research and community service in the social, humanities and tourism fields, capable of providing comprehensive solutions to the dynamics of socio-culture and society. Based on the main tasks of PSP, the following objectives are arranged:

  1. Creating an academic atmosphere in studies in the social, humanities, and tourism fields that are innovative, creative and competitive
  2. Implementing the results of studies in the social, humanities and tourism fields so that they have high use value for social life;
  3. Expanding collaborative research partners and community service activities with partner institutions from universities, the private sector at the local, to international levels, as well as local governments in order to increase theoretical and practical contributions to social life in society; and
  4. Disseminate the work and results of research and dedication in the social, humanities and tourism fields to the wider community in order to create a smart and cultured society.

In order to achieve the objectives of PSP, the three existing field coordinators formulated an umbrella for research and service which is designed to describe the scope of focus of the three areas in this center, including:

  1. Local wisdom and mapping of cultural capital as tourism assets in the buffer zone of the southern coast of East Java
  2. Map of the potential and problems of traditional / indigenous communities in developing marine tourism
  3. Economic independent tourism village model
  4. The model of using village land for empowerment of the local economy to support tourism potential
  5. Innovation in managing economic potential through empowerment of tourism resources
  6. IT optimization formula to increase village capacity in tourism development
  7. Strengthening community capabilities for tourism asset management innovations
  8. strengthening of local cultural arts as a supporting commodity for marine tourism
  9. Capacity building and strengthening of village institutional structures to support tourism
  10. Prevention of terrorism, radicalism, and strengthening tolerance
  11. Media, technology and democracy
  12. Increased entrepreneurial participation of rural communities
  13. Strengthening local wisdom and culture of village communities
  14. Rural industry innovation and acceleration
  15. Urban Poverty
  16. Availability, quality and connectivity of public spaces
  17. Increasing public legal awareness

C. Roadmap

In an effort to realize the goals that have been prepared, PSP designs activities roadmap which will be carried out during one period from 2019-2024 (Table 1). This priority activity aims to ensure the achievement of all existing missions. The mid-term plan is described in seven main activities, among others, (1) routine activities such as research and community service, guest lectures, and improving the quality of human resources, (2) annual activities such as building cooperation networks, and international seminars which are held every biennially (International Conference on Humanities and Social Sciences - ICHSS).
